From Fort Sill Public Affairs Office

The body of Pfc. Patrick Washington, 28, of A Battery, 1st Battalion, 31st Field Artillery, was recovered Monday.

Washington was reported missing Saturday evening after a kayak he was riding on flipped over sending him and another soldier into the water. The other soldier was able to make it to shore. However, witnesses told investigators that Washington went under and never resurfaced.

Divers from the Lawton Police Department Dive Team had been assisting post officials in the search since Sunday. Additional assistance came from the Wichita Falls Police Department Dive Team and an Oklahoma Highway Patrol boat.

Washington’s body was located about 4 p.m. Monday. He is survived by a wife and two children, ages 5 years-old and five months-old.

“By all accounts, Patrick Washington was a great person and a great soldier,” said Col. Glenn Water, Fort Sill Garrison commander. “He will truly be missed from the Fort Sill community.”

No further information is available as the accident is still under investigation.
