Affordable Ways to Stay Cool During Summer in Oklahoma
It's never too early to start prepping for big events in Oklahoma - and the summer is an event of its own. Once the days never reach below 80 degrees, even when the sun goes down, it's a struggle to stay cool for most Oklahomans. It's even more of a struggle to do without spending a ton of money in air conditioning and water bills. That is, unless you take our advice with these cheap tips to stay cool during the summer.
Dress Cool
And we don't just mean as a stylistic choice. Natural fibers like cotton and linen are best for breathability. Once summer hits, store away the duvet and opt for linen sheets for your nighttime routine and dress in light colored cotton during the day.
Open Windows
Admittedly, hot air doesn't always help and sometimes Oklahoma wind only blows the hot air around. But if you're lucky enough to have shaded areas near your home or by a body of water, opening the windows might give you and your electricity a bit of relief.
Cool, Damp Cloths
You may have been told to freeze a cloth or clothes, but the coolness is quick to escape once it's in the Oklahoma sun. Freezing also takes quite a while, versus using cool water to dampen a cloth and placing it on the back of your neck or forehead.
Darker the Better
Keeping the house cool can be as simple as drawing all the curtains and blinds. Finding or creating shade ahead of time can save you a much bigger bill at the end of every month.
Cook Outside
If you want to keep the heat out, it's important not to create it inside. Grilling and cooking outdoors is a great way to keep the heat outside where it belongs and allows the house to stay the cool sanctuary you need to escape to.
Point Fan Out of the Window
You've already got the windows open, might as well take advantage and create your own breeze. Box fans are great to use in the window and run on very little electricity, compared to other cooling machines.
Swimming or Keeping Feet in Cool Water
Take a look around at Oklahoma's wildlife during the summer - you'll notice that animals continue to thrive despite the heat. Most of them use water to keep cool: swimming, constantly drinking, sometimes just standing and soaking their feet. Take their advice: swim when you can in lakes or pools (public or municipal), stay hydrated and if worse comes to worst, cool your feet.
